One of the squatter neighbourhoods that we work with is situated on top of a cliff. The lack of any planning has meant that the infrastructure is lacking. The households are not connected to a sewage system. Instead they have had to rely on digging out an open gutter/canal system. Unfortunately, this system is likely to overflow creating a very unpleasant and unhygienic atmosphere. When this happened, the residents would have to call in a truck to pump out the excess water. This project served in the end 77 households (containing up to 25 residents) in the al-Fawakheer area in Old Cairo.
